It is highly contagious and spreads easily through droplets from the nose and throat when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Antibiotics do not work against RSV as it is a virus. Rest and hydration are best for managing mild symptoms. You can manage fever and pain with over-the-counter medications. Most RSV infections will go away on their own within 7-14 days. These symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>high fever<\/li>\n<li>bluish tint to your skin<\/li>\n<li>wheezing and worsening cough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing these symptoms, you should call Triple Zero 000 or go to hospital. I get vaccinated against RSV?","paragraph_text":"<p>Vaccination is approved for Australians aged 60 years and over and for pregnant women at 28\u201336 weeks gestation to protect their newborn. Vaccination is recommended for adults aged over 60 who are living with chronic respiratory diseases \u2013 discuss with your GP or pharmacist whether you should receive the vaccine. From February 2025, the vaccine is free for pregnant women and likely to become free for those aged 75 years and over and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60-74 years. ","content":"<p>If you are living with a lung condition, be aware that young children are most commonly infected with RSV. You may need to avoid young children when they are unwell with respiratory viruses to protect yourself.
