{"id":90943,"date":"2023-05-02T13:02:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T03:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/?post_type=article&#038;p=90943"},"modified":"2024-06-06T10:44:31","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T00:44:31","slug":"lung-foundation-australia-welcomes-investment-in-a-national-targeted-lung-cancer-screening-program","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/news\/lung-foundation-australia-welcomes-investment-in-a-national-targeted-lung-cancer-screening-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Lung Foundation Australia welcomes investment in a National Targeted Lung Cancer Screening Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Media Statement<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#15873e\">Today\u2019s announcement of a National Targeted Lung Cancer Screening Program is a momentous step forward for all Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year approximately 14,500 people living in Australia are diagnosed with lung cancer, for the majority their cancer will be caught too late and they will die prematurely with a five-year survival rate of just 20%.<sup>1<\/sup> Lung cancer remains our nation\u2019s biggest cancer killer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement today gives much more than hope, it gives a second chance at life. A National Targeted Lung Cancer Screening Program will save the lives of 12,000 Australians over the next ten years by diagnosing over 70% of cases at an earlier stage.<sup>2,3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lung Foundation Australia<\/a> commends the Albanese Government and Minister Butler for fiercely supporting the lung cancer community and investing in screening today. It\u2019s not only a success for the lung cancer community but for Australia as a whole. A National Targeted Lung Cancer Screening Program is the first major cancer screening to be implemented in Australia in decades and will undoubtedly follow the success of breast, cervical and bowel cancer screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A national program is vital for all Australians impacted, but especially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, who are 70% more likely to die from <a href=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/patients-carers\/conditions\/lung-cancer\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lung cancer<\/a> than non-Indigenous Australians.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#15873e\">\u201cLung Foundation Australia are absolutely thrilled with the Minister\u2019s announcement. For more than five years we have advocated for a program that would help address the inequity outcomes for Australia\u2019s biggest cancer killer \u2013 lung cancer \u2013 and today we can finally say we have achieved that goal\u201d \u2013 <em>Mark Brooke, CEO Lung Foundation Australia.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, we want to acknowledge our industry partners and our community members.
