Some trials look at how people respond and what side effects might occur which helps determine if it works, if it is safe to use, and if it is better than the interventions that are already available<sup>1<\/sup>. A trial might also compare existing interventions, test new ways to use or combine existing interventions or observe how people respond to other factors that might affect their health (such as dietary changes)<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Participation in clinical trials drives innovation and best practice in healthcare, and generates the evidence needed to aid in decision making.\u00a0If you are interested in taking part in a clinical trial, the first step is to ask the question &#8211; is a clinical trial right for you? You can then find out if there is something suitable for you, as well as what is involved. The research found a substantial number of participants had symptoms of anxiety and depression. Often the people who had anxiety and depression also had significant breathlessness and cough. The researchers were surprised by the significant proportion of participants who had mood related symptoms at the start, and who also had persistent symptoms 12 months later.\r\n\r\nIf you have IPF or are caring for someone with IPF, and are experiencing significant breathlessness and cough, it is important to talk to your health professional, particularly if you are feeling any anxiety or depression. Your health professional will talk to you about treatments available, including medications and psychological or cognitive therapies.\r\n<h4>IPF signs, symptoms and support<\/h4>\r\nSeptember marked Global Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month and Lung Foundation Australia raised awareness about (IPF) and the signs, symptoms\u00a0and support for this rare and debilitating disease. This signature identifies that a sub-group of patients who were initially diagnosed with IPF, also present with autoimmune-like features. It is possible that these individuals, with altered immune responses, may be more likely to respond to treatment with immunotherapy. Research is ongoing to determine if this discovery will be useful in identifying this group of patients that may have some cross-over features between auto-immune conditions and IPF. This work is being performed at the Institute for Respiratory Health and Centre for Respiratory Health at the University of Western Australia.\r\n\r\n<strong>What do you hope to achieve with this research project?<\/strong>\r\n\r\nIn our laboratory, we combine the analysis of data taken from experimental models that mimic the disease with the detailed analysis of patient samples to investigate cell-mediated responses driving lung fibrosis. Specifically, we are investigating the functional role of immune cells in the development and progression of lung fibrosis.
