While there is currently no cure for this range of conditions, there are treatments and strategies that can help manage symptoms, slow progression, and help you to live well.","link":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"wysiwyg_content_area","heading":"What is pneumoconiosis?","content":"<p>Pneumoconiosis is the general term for lung fibrosis, or lung scarring, caused by inhalation of dust. Inhaling this dust causes a reaction in the lungs, including inflammation, which can lead to scar tissue (fibrosis) or small masses of tissue (nodules) forming. Many different dusts can cause pneumoconiosis leading to different types of pneumoconiosis.<\/p>\n<p>The most common types of pneumoconiosis include <a href=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/patients-carers\/conditions\/occupational-lung-disease\/asbestosis\/\">asbestosis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/patients-carers\/conditions\/occupational-lung-disease\/silicosis\/\">silicosis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/patients-carers\/conditions\/occupational-lung-disease\/coal-workers-pneumoconiosis\/\">coal worker’s pneumoconiosis<\/a> (or black lung disease). Other types of pneumoconiosis and their causes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mixed-dust pneumoconiosis \u2013 exposure to more than one hazardous dust<\/li>\n<li>Aluminosis (or aluminium lung) \u2013 aluminium-bearing dust<\/li>\n<li>Berylliosis (or chronic beryllium disease) \u2013 dusts or vapours containing beryllium<\/li>\n<li>Byssinosis (or brown lung disease) \u2013 dust from vegetable fibres, such as flax, hemp or cotton<\/li>\n<li>Diffuse dust-related fibrosis (or diffuse dust fibrosis or coal mine dust-related diffuse fibrosis) \u2013 coal mine dust<\/li>\n<li>Hard metal pneumoconiosis (or hard metal lung disease) \u2013 dusts from hard metals such as tungsten, tungsten carbide and cobalt<\/li>\n<li>Talcosis \u2013 talc dust<\/li>\n<li>Welder\u2019s lung \u2013 welding fumes (e.g.. iron dust, oxidized metals such as Aluminium, cobalt, copper, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: This is not an exhaustive list of all types of pneumoconiosis.<\/em><\/p>\n","link":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"column_content","columns":[{"column_type":"text","heading_text":"","paragraph_text":"<h2>Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Many people with early stages of pneumoconiosis have no symptoms. Symptoms do not usually develop until many years after exposure. You may no longer be exposed to the hazardous agent by the time symptoms arise. When symptoms do present, they may range from mild to severe.
