have made with your research to date \u2013 and how will this make a difference to patients with this disease?\u202f<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559740":360}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have discovered a specific immune cell signature that identifies that a sub-group of patients who were initially diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), also present with autoimmune-like features. Although further validation is needed, this signature may be useful in identifying this group of patients early. It is possible that these individuals with altered immune responses may be more likely to respond to treatment with immunotherapy.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559740":360}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">For <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tylah<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Miles, research means new discoveries and new treatments.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559740":240}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What do you hope to achieve with this research project?<\/span><\/b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{"134233117":true,"134233118":true,"201341983":0,"335559740":360}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our research investigates the cell-mediated responses driving lung fibrosis. In our laboratory we combine the analysis of pre-clinical models of disease with the detailed analysis of patient samples. Specifically, we are investigating the functional role of immune cells in the development and progression of lung fibrosis. The implication of this is that we may be able to identify fibroblast-derived biomarkers which may identify particular patients who would be most likely to benefit from treatment with Pirfenidone.\n<h4>What do you hope to achieve with this research project?<\/h4>\nI hope to better understand clinical differences between patients whose fibroblasts responded to Pirfenidone and those whose fibroblasts did not.\n<h4>How important was the funding from Lung Foundation Australia to your work?<\/h4>\nFunding from Lung Foundation Australia helped to provide the very first bits of data, which were presented at national and international conferences to great interest. And research means hope \u2026 hope for greater understanding of lung disease, and of better medications to deal with it.<em> <\/em><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Bill, father of three and grandfather to five, was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) in March 2015. Since then, despite having just 53 per cent lung capacity, Bill has taken on two gruelling physical and mental challenges, sharing his inspiring story with communities along the way. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In 2017, Bill completed The Long Walk for Lungs, a 15-day, 700km walk across central NSW which raised more than $100,000 to fund research and support services. Then, in 2018, he completed The Long Kayak for Lungs \u2013 a 42-day, 2,200km journey along the Murray River which raised another $94,000 to support Australians living with lung disease. From 2016 to 2018 Bill's fundraising activities raised more than $210,000 for research.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Those staggering efforts helped to fund the work of Tylah Miles, whose research into immune cells in lung fibrosis patients may eventually identify novel therapeutic targets.  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThrough the association with Lung Foundation, I was able to get an understanding of how you could directly fund research,\u201d Bill said. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThere is a real inequity in research about some of these lesser-known diseases. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cI hope (research such as Tylah\u2019s) will provide the knowledge, alongside medications, to ease the journey; slow disease progression and in some cases even cure it.\u201d <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Bill recalls it was a \u201clittle scary\u201d when he was first diagnosed with early-stage IPF. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cMy older sister had been diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disorder. So\u202fI was aware of disease progression \u2026  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cMy wife Lesley had just come through eight months of treatment for ovarian cancer, and we were in the process of being grateful that all went well and that she was in remission, and still is thankfully. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cIt was also a bit of a shock for my children, as they had watched my sister, their aunt, go through something like this several years earlier, at a time when little could be done. I didn\u2019t tell a lot of friends, as I\u2019d decided to have this fight privately. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cIn hindsight this was a mistake as support is key, particularly in the early days \u2026 I discovered that you can easily become consumed with the outcome rather than the journey, and what is not possible rather than what is.\u201d <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Bill, with the assistance of new medications becoming available, has defied the original diagnosis and takes great heart from research and pharmaceutical developments. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThat was a great boost in the early days. I went from being told there\u2019s nothing we can do for you (to) suddenly having access to drugs. Even in the past six or seven months, some of these larger pharmaceutical companies have made further investments into research of pulmonary fibrosis \u2026  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cWhat I do struggle with is the fatigue that seems to accompany IPF. But I accept that and work my life around it. We still travel, eat out, and I work, just not at night.  <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThe side effects can take a toll on the mental side, as can be quite physically draining, but I have maintained my role and exercise despite them. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>Who knows what research may provide for us in the years ahead<\/em><em> \u2026 there is no hope without research, and there is no research without donations.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"textAlign\":\"center\"} -->\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Give hope to Australian families affected by PF.
