{"id":730,"date":"2017-08-30T10:21:52","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T00:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/?post_type=article&#038;p=730"},"modified":"2020-11-18T21:54:29","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T11:54:29","slug":"tax-hike-on-cigarettes-set-to-burn-smokers","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/news\/tax-hike-on-cigarettes-set-to-burn-smokers\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax hike on cigarettes set to burn smokers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>ACT leads the nation to help smokers quit<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Australia, 29 August 2017<\/strong>: As the Federal Government raises taxes on cigarettes this week, the ACT continues to lead Australia in their commitment to support programs to help quit smoking for good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-26587 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_5739_resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" \/>The ACT Government is getting behind healthcare professionals through Lung Foundation Australia\u2019s QUIT4october<sup>TM<\/sup> initiative to help people achieve the goal of being smoke free for one month, making them at least five times more likely to become a permanent ex-smoker.<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 12.5 per cent annual tax hikes will see many smokers cough up at least $1.30 to $3.35 more tax per pack, depending on size, taking the average price of a pack of cigarettes to around $22-$25.<\/p>\n<p>Lung Foundation Australia CEO Heather Allan said price increases, such as those resulting from a tax rise, were a proven and effective strategy to motivate smokers to quit.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year, about 15,000 Australians die prematurely from diseases caused by smoking. In addition to having significant health impacts, smoking is an expensive habit. If a pack-a-day smoker quits, they are likely to save more than $6,500 per year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are immediate health benefits to quitting smoking at any age. Stopping smoking decreases the risk of lung and other cancers, heart attack, stroke and chronic disease.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the first time QUIT4october is educating GPs and pharmacists to work together and start the quit conversation with their patients and customers. Lung Foundation Australia is working closely with the Pharmacy Guild Australia to implement the QUIT4october campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope to roll out this approach across the nation, beginning this year with the ACT and mirroring the successful approach in Tasmania which has the second highest rate of smoking in the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ACT President and community pharmacist, Amanda Galbraith commented that ACT had led the way in helping smokers to quit through pharmacy led intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Research showed the most successful way to quit smoking was with the support of a health professional such as a GP, pharmacist and allied health professional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly three to five per cent of \u201ccold turkey\u201d quit attempts \u2013 are successful, compared to 25 per cent of those that use health professional support and stop-smoking medication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout September, Australians are being called on to encourage friends and family who smoke to seek support from their GP and pharmacist and a month-long campaign starting on Sunday 1 October, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>People wanting to join QUIT4october\u2122 to quit smoking should visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quit4october.com.au\">www.quit4october.com.au<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[i]<\/a>\u00a0 West R., Stapleton J.
