As COPD medicines act on the airways and the lungs, most are taken through an inhaler device.

Using an inhaler device is a skill and research shows up to 90% of Australians do not use their inhaler device correctly1. By having the right inhaler device technique, you can be sure the medicine is getting to where it needs to be in your lungs and doing what it needs to do to reduce your symptoms.

If you are experiencing any of the following, make sure you check you are using your inhaler correctly2:

You are still feeling breathless after using your inhaler

A mist of medicine particles comes out of the top of the device when you use it or out of your mouth when you breathe out after using your inhaler

You feel the medicine mostly on your tongue.

There are different types of COPD inhalers which can work differently. It is best to ask your health professional to show you how to use your inhaler correctly and help you to practice getting the technique right. If your inhaler device changes or extra medicines are added, this can complicate your treatment. The more inhaler types you are using, the greater the chance you have of using them incorrectly. If you are using more than two inhalers, talk to your doctor about the possibility of reducing the number you need to use. This can often be done without changing the type of medicine inside the inhaler device.

Over time, you may also start to take short cuts or develop bad habits. This means you may not be getting the full dose of medicine needed to manage your symptoms. It is important to regularly check your technique with your General Practitioner, nurse or pharmacist.

References

1 National Asthma Council, 2018, https://www.nationalasthma.org.au/living-with-asthma/resources/health-professionals/information-paper/hp-inhaler-technique-for-people-with-asthma-or-copd
2 NPS MedicineWise, 2017, https://www.nps.org.au/medical-info/consumer-info/inhaler-devices-for-respiratory-medicines?c=when-to-check-your-inhaler-technique-94159ec3

Better Living with COPD provides a detailed overview of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and how to manage the condition. Unfortunately, my work life exposed me to irritants in industrial plants, machinery and equipment and I was born in the 40s and like many of my generation, I was a regular smoker until I quit in when I was 50.

I guess my positive, cavalier or casual approach to life convinced me that I was somehow immune to lung disease and it was something other people suffered.

In 2003, I began to experience subtle symptoms which belied the seriousness of the condition that I now live with. Like many, I had excuses and reasons for them all. The shortness of breath walking up some hills I assumed I was getting older or I because I didn’t exercise as much as I should. The cough seemed to hang on much longer after a bout of the flu or a bad cold. I seemed to be getting more chest infections than I used to however I was travelling in areas of weather extremes and exposed to varying levels of health in the general population – I assumed that was the cause.

It wasn’t until my mid-fifties I was told I had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and had lost more than 25 per cent of my lung capacity. The specialist simply said as long as you do not smoke again, you should have many years in front of you. In my mind I had already quit smoking six years before, so there was no need to do anything further.

Fast forward to 2011, I was eight years older, and despite all my bravado and self-deception, I was forced by events to confront reality. My breathing was now considerably worse and beginning to impact my everyday living. Things began to take longer to do and everyday activities such as fishing, gardening, playing with grandchildren were becoming a chore. Planning physical activity became a necessary part of every day to avoid increasing tiredness and the need to rest. I worked hard to hide the worst of my symptoms from my greatest supporter, and most severe critic, my significant other. Work responsibilities also began to bear down on me as the disability spiral kicked up a gear.

Fortunately for me, my wife is far smarter than I am and, having grown tired of letting me believe that she saw none of this, insisted that I consult another respiratory specialist, do what I was told, and plan an exit from work. Another breathing test result now showed a 50 per cent loss of predicted capacity, I faced reality and my own mortality squarely in the eye for the very first time. I began an eight week pulmonary rehabilitation at the Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital soon after. Once the pulmonary rehabilitation program was finished, the group was urged to ‘maintain the gains’ at weekly Lungs in Action community group-based pulmonary maintenance exercise classes.

I attend this class twice weekly and I believe this is one of the most critical factors in maintaining good health for people with COPD. It’s taught me not to be too hard on myself. Living with COPD is a day-to-day proposition. I believe in doing what I can and being honest with myself. If I am breathless I always remember that in a while I will recover.

I am now more than 12 years post diagnosis and after completing pulmonary rehabilitation and starting my volunteer work with Lung Foundation Australia, I can look back with some satisfaction at where I am and what I have achieved.

My COPD is stable, despite having suffered a couple of exacerbations over the last few years while travelling overseas. The fact that I have travelled at all is testimony to the fact that there is life after diagnosis and my commitment to maintenance exercise and close attention to medication and preventative measures plays no small role in that.

This is my story. Whether you’re a patient, carer, clinician or bystander, I hope what I have shared resonates with you in some way.

Sharing your personal experience with lung disease is a compelling and inspiring way for others to learn about and cope with their diagnosis. The cough was present, severe and paroxysmal and sometimes almost incessant.”

“Because I had a couple of episodes of pneumonia, I was suspicious there might be a trigger.

I was finding it difficult to walk up and down stairs at my local train station without becoming short of breath.

I had a spirometry test to diagnose COPD and now see a respiratory specialist every three months as well as a cardiac specialist.”

“In the past three years I was also diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension, with an exacerbation of shortness of breath on exertion.”

“I am fortunate that my diagnosis hasn’t negatively impacted my working or personal life. My mobility and ability to walk any distance, particularly up hills or stairs, is limited but in general COPD doesn’t affect my day-to-day life.

I won’t let it stop me from doing the things I love like road trips to visit my family.

To help live well with her condition, Maureen has completed a six week pulmonary rehabilitation exercise program at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital and continues to complete the exercise she learnt at home. She also attends the Geriatric Assessment and Rehab Unit on Lutwyche Rd where she does various programs including a balance program.

Maureen is passionate about better education for young people around the dangers of smoking.

“Having smoked for over 40 years I was not surprised that my lungs were compromised. My family strongly objected to my smoking and was very verbal about this. However it was my lifestyle choice that I did not want to cease as it was not compromising me personally in anyway.

“There been so much promotional information about the dangers of risk factors such as smoking and work place health and safety, but it’s had limited success.

“The addiction of smoking is a very difficult habit to break and social interaction can trigger a desire to partake."

There needs to be better education from an early age and programs included in primary school levels to ensure young people are made aware of the consequences of smoking and its effect on your body and lifestyle as time goes on.”

Despite its challenges, Maureen lives life to the fullest.

“In my retirement I enjoy road trips in my lime green convertible Saab that I bought for myself as a 75th birthday present.

“I love driving to visit my sister and her family in Bundaberg and my daughter and family who live in Glen Innes. My other two daughters live nearby and we often drive to Fingal Head and enjoy surfing.

“My whole family has had the pleasure of travelling the highways in my car.”

Maureen’s life mantra is:
Be a girl with a mind,
A woman with attitude and,
A lady with class.

Sharing your personal experience with lung disease is a compelling and inspiring way for others to learn about and cope with their diagnosis.
