She was told she would never see her children graduate.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:32% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2500-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11849 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2500-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2500-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2500-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2500-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2500-1920x1280.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2500.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Yet research conducted overseas has brightened the outlook for the former&nbsp;flight attendant, who&nbsp;was stunned to be diagnosed with&nbsp;metastatic&nbsp;Stage&nbsp;4&nbsp;non-small cell lung cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>She was fatigued, had low&nbsp;iron&nbsp;levels and had been battling what seemed&nbsp;a terrible cold for about four weeks&nbsp;but never suspected the news that was to come.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;d been going to my GP for two years saying I was tired, and we just put it down to work and looking after children,\u201d Georgia says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI mentioned to my GP that I&#8217;d blown my nose and there was a tiny bit of blood. I didn&#8217;t think anything of it \u2026 I had basically been at a spin class, and I was running around and doing lots of\u202flong- haul\u202fflights.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMy GP said `you&#8217;d better go next door and have an X-ray\u2019 \u2026&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgia found herself booked in for a CT scan \u2026 and&nbsp;received&nbsp;the shattering diagnosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Life-changing research from genomic testing carried out overseas was a game changer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy treatment so far has involved chemotherapy, a lobectomy, immunotherapy, 30 radiation sessions and I&#8217;m now on a daily targeted therapy tablet,\u201d she says.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope research will give everyone in Australia access to the same level of amazing care I had with my&nbsp;specialised&nbsp;nurses and oncologists, which enabled me to access cutting-edge testing&nbsp;from the United States of America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>My hope for the future from gathering research is that lung cancer survivorship for five years is at 90<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;per cent,<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;in line with all the other cancers.<\/strong><strong>\u201d<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research has&nbsp;dramatically&nbsp;changed the prognosis for&nbsp;Georgia. It can improve the lives of other Australians with&nbsp;lung conditions too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 32%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2452-Edit-1024x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11850 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2452-Edit-1024x675.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2452-Edit-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2452-Edit-768x506.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2452-Edit-1536x1012.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2452-Edit-1920x1265.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/DSC2452-Edit.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cMy&nbsp;hope for the future is that lung cancer will be managed and treated as a chronic illness.&nbsp;\u201d&nbsp;she says.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cResearch would mean that lung cancer would have more than four drugs to treat&nbsp;people living with lung cancer&nbsp;and give us a little bit more time to spend with our loved ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNearly 10,000 people die of lung cancer a year.
