Today, Liz has raised $37,000 to support life-changing lung cancer research and support. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will always remember my&nbsp;Mum for her strength. She wasn&#8217;t ashamed of who she was. She was\u202fthe strongest person I&#8217;ve ever met.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I read the statistics&nbsp;after&nbsp;Mum was diagnosed, I was devastated. I didn&#8217;t really realise until after my&nbsp;Mum&nbsp;passed away how unfair patients&nbsp;with lung cancer&nbsp;are treated and how little funding goes into looking after or looking into lung cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\" style=\"border-color:#313131\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#491b62\"><p>\u201cIf there was more research put into lung cancer, I still might have my mum.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although&nbsp;Ellen&nbsp;never said it, Liz knows that her&nbsp;Mum, a former smoker,&nbsp;was ashamed of her diagnosis and told few people.&nbsp;After Ellen passed away Liz was shocked, frustrated and heartbroken by the number of people who&nbsp;commented on Ellen\u2019s smoking history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople didn&#8217;t care about anything else. Her battle, who she was, how we were, all they wanted to know was,&nbsp;\u2018did she smoke?\u2019.&nbsp;As if that justified why she died.&nbsp;I got sick of being asked those\u202fquestions, and I got sick of defending why I thought that my mum didn&#8217;t deserve to die.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stigma associated with lung cancer&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;Australia&#8217;s biggest cancer killer&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;is&nbsp;a roadblock to&nbsp;treatment,&nbsp;care, support and&nbsp;funding for&nbsp;research.&nbsp;After&nbsp;her devastating loss, Liz&nbsp;wanted to raise money for&nbsp;research,&nbsp;and she knew she wanted it to be&nbsp;big&nbsp;to&nbsp;help raise&nbsp;awareness. In its first year&nbsp;her&nbsp;LungRaiser&nbsp;Charity&nbsp;Ball&nbsp;raised over $17,000&nbsp;and&nbsp;over $20,000&nbsp;in its second.&nbsp;With the funds raised and in honour of&nbsp;Liz\u2019s&nbsp;late mother, the&nbsp;<em>Lung Foundation Australia&nbsp;Ellen Yates Memorial Grant in Aid<\/em>&nbsp;was established.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_4377-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_4377-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_4377-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_4377-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_4377-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_4377-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_4377-1920x1440.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Today, the grant is supporting young researcher, Dr&nbsp;Afaf&nbsp;Abed whose&nbsp;project&nbsp;is investigating treatment response in people living with lung cancer. This&nbsp;research&nbsp;has the potential to help advance our understanding of when a treatment is working optimally and when it isn&#8217;t&nbsp;\u2013 a critical step to helping&nbsp;to identify the&nbsp;most effective treatment&nbsp;for an individual&nbsp;as early as possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI am so humbled to be able to do this. It\u2019s a real privilege.&nbsp;I wanted to do something that I knew that would make&nbsp;Mum&nbsp;proud&nbsp;and I think I&#8217;ve done that.
