Please note some information is USA specific.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->","post_title":"Pulmonary Exercise Training before and after Lung Transplantation","post_excerpt":"","post_status":"publish","comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","post_password":"","post_name":"pulmonary-exercise-training-before-and-after-lung-transplantation","to_ping":"","pinged":"","post_modified":"2021-02-08 08:43:16","post_modified_gmt":"2021-02-07 22:43:16","post_content_filtered":"","post_parent":0,"guid":"http:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/?post_type=link&#038;p=12333","menu_order":0,"post_type":"link","post_mime_type":"","comment_count":"0","filter":"raw"}]},{"acf_fc_layout":"featured_posts_static","heading":"Community stories","view_more_link":"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/stories\/?condition=23","posts":[{"ID":421,"post_author":"3","post_date":"2018-09-06 13:02:57","post_date_gmt":"2018-09-06 03:02:57","post_content":"It all started between 1962 and 1978. \u00a0My husband was a machinist but did many different tasks in his job in the mineralogy department. \u00a0It was never mentioned to me, but my husband machined asbestos sheets one third of an inch thick. \u00a0He would bring his dirty clothes home, shake them out and add them to the laundry basket with the rest of our clothes.\r\n<blockquote>I often visited him for lunch as anyone was allowed into the workshop. \u00a0With no mask on, I would wait in a brick room whilst he finished his job.<\/blockquote>\r\nIn 2003, we moved house as the other place was becoming too much for my husband to look after. \u00a0In 2004, my husband went for a CT scan which diagnosed him with asbestosis. \u00a0He unfortunately passed away in 2006, not from asbestosis but from other complications.\r\n\r\nIn 2005, whilst my husband was alive but not well, I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).\u00a0 Of course I didn\u2019t know what this was and I was too preoccupied caring for my husband to worry at the time. \u00a0I was also diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD).\r\n\r\nFor many years I was seeing a lung specialist and having many different tests. \u00a0At the end of 2010, I was diagnosed with asbestosis, which was a big shock to me.\r\n\r\nIn 2011, my son took me to America to see my eldest son and grandchildren whom I had not seen for about eight or nine years. \u00a0A few weeks after this trip, I was rushed to hospital where they found I had four clots in my lungs. \u00a0This hit me very hard, especially when in November that same year I was rushed to hospital again and was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension in my lungs.\u00a0 I thought I was going to die.\r\n\r\nAfter this incident, the doctors recommended joining an exercise program. \u00a0Of course I said yes, anything to try and help me carry on. \u00a0It\u2019s good to know you are not the only one with lung problems. \u00a0I was able to learn from others on how they cope with their problems and we tried to help each other. \u00a0I attended Easy Breathers twice a week for six weeks, but because of my many lung problems they wanted me to do a further six weeks. \u00a0I was then relocated to an exercise class closer to home.\r\n\r\nI now attend these exercise classes once a week. \u00a0Sometimes I really don\u2019t want to go, but after I have been, I feel better mentally and know that I have achieved something and certainly believe it has helped to keep me out of hospital. \u00a0Exercise, so I believe, is the best thing to keep you going.\u00a0 Even just walking a little every day, otherwise the muscles get very weak.\r\n\r\nI now have Pulmonary Fibrosis, ILD, bronchiectasis, Asbestosis, Pulmonary Hypertension and remnants of the old clots left. \u00a0I also had pneumonia in 2015.\u00a0 My Pulmonary Fibrosis is no longer idiopathic because they know the cause as to why I have it \u2013 the asbestosis caused the fibrosis.\r\n<h4>Sharing your personal experience with lung disease is a compelling and inspiring way for others to learn about and cope with their diagnosis. I can\u2019t believe that in this age of genetically-specific therapies and 3D joint printing, we still have diseases that no one knows the cause of, that have such poor&nbsp;prognosis&nbsp;and so few people have heard of it unless it actually affects someone they love.\u201d&nbsp;- Philippa. <\/h4>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For thousands of Australians\u00a0like\u00a0Richard,\u00a0who lives with Idiopathic\u00a0Pulmonary\u00a0Fibrosis\u00a0(IPF),\u00a0research is hope.\u00a0As his wife,\u00a0Philippa,\u00a0supports Richard through\u00a0the\u00a0good and bad days, she\u2019s determined to help raise awareness\u00a0of the devastating disease\u00a0and help provide hope for a brighter future.\u00a0This October,\u00a0Philippa will be pounding the pavement as she takes part in the virtual City 2 Surf event to raise vital funds to support life-changing research.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cAfter experiencing a persistent cough&nbsp;for over a year&nbsp;and constantly&nbsp;having to&nbsp;clear his throat,&nbsp;Richard was diagnosed with IPF in mid-2017.&nbsp;He was&nbsp;pretty fit&nbsp;and regularly cycled&nbsp;the 20km&nbsp;circuit&nbsp;around lake Burley-Griffin here in Canberra. He noticed some breathlessness helping a friend&nbsp;move to a new house, and his breathing pitch changed&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;we&nbsp;joked that it sounded like he was \u201cgrowling\u201d at times.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>After some persuasion (he\u2019d say nagging)&nbsp;Richard&nbsp;went to the GP who sent him for a chest x-ray and&nbsp;suggested&nbsp;an inhaler. After a few months&nbsp;nothing really changed, and Richard was&nbsp;referred to a respiratory specialist&nbsp;who sent him for&nbsp;a CT scan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The&nbsp;shock of&nbsp;his IPF diagnosis&nbsp;was brutal<strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp;Not long after we got that I was scheduled to go back to the UK for a couple of weeks&nbsp;of&nbsp;work, and I often used those work trips to grab a couple of days leave at the start and end of the trips to catch up with family&nbsp;who live over there.&nbsp;I can vividly remember managing to hold it together all through that long flight, and the drive from Heathrow to my parent\u2019s house and getting in through the front door and bursting into tears again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While&nbsp;research has discovered&nbsp;treatments that&nbsp;can help to&nbsp;slow the progression of IPF,&nbsp;a&nbsp;lung transplant is the only intervention shown to increase life expectancy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s&nbsp;a complacency&nbsp;about much needed organs for donation, but we were determined to get on to the St Vincent\u2019s Transplant Unit\u2019s radar as soon as possible and they have been so supportive.&nbsp;We also connected with advocates like Donate Life.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>After a decline in 2019, we were so grateful that Richard was already having regular check-ups &amp; monitoring at St Vincent\u2019s Heart &amp; Lung Transplant Unit, so they started him on the process for transplant listing. He was activated on the list in January 2020.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Along the way we&nbsp;also&nbsp;found&nbsp;Lung Foundation Australia and&nbsp;through the organisation,&nbsp;heard the stories of&nbsp;inspiring people like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lungfoundation.com.au\/stories\/bills-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill&nbsp;Van Nierop<\/a>.&nbsp;Knowing there is support available, and importantly, peer-support, is vital for any life-changing illness.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As IPF progresses,&nbsp;breathing becomes increasingly more difficult and even&nbsp;the simplest of day-to-day tasks can&nbsp;become&nbsp;challenging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cBecause of Richard\u2019s decline, we have had to move&nbsp;as he was finding it increasingly difficult to manage the stairs.&nbsp;He loves cooking and now&nbsp;has to&nbsp;use&nbsp;his oxygen concentrator&nbsp;to do it. He also&nbsp;has a mobility scooter for anything further than a couple of hundred metres from the apartment.&nbsp;This winter has been particularly difficult to navigate with the COVID-19 restrictions severely limiting contact with our&nbsp;family, as well as the cold of a Canberra winter keeping him inside. He tires so easily now which is hard to watch, and it can be<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>difficult to navigate the fine line between offering to help and over&nbsp;asking!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Australian-based research into this complex disease has provided significant advances in treatments which are&nbsp;giving&nbsp;hope that never existed before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cWhat shocked me was that there were only two medicines available on the Pharmaceutical&nbsp;Benefits&nbsp;Scheme&nbsp;and they only \u201cslowed\u201d the disease&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;not&nbsp;curing or&nbsp;even&nbsp;halting&nbsp;the progress. The essential ingredients\u202ffor Idiopathic&nbsp;Pulmonary&nbsp;Fibrosis (IPF)&nbsp;to be resolved\u202fin the future\u202fare;\u202ftime, energy and money.\u201d - John<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>IPF\u202fis a&nbsp;debilitating and&nbsp;complex disease and very little is&nbsp;understood about&nbsp;what causes the condition and how it behaves.&nbsp;Currently, the survival rates can be as low as some of the most devastating cancers.&nbsp;Unlike&nbsp;many&nbsp;people who are\u202fdiagnosed\u202fwith\u202fthe rare&nbsp;condition, John&nbsp;learnt first-hand the devastating&nbsp;toll this disease&nbsp;could&nbsp;take on his life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cI\u202fhad\u202fbeen diagnosed with IPF and possible Post-inflammatory Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) in 2011 after a\u202fbushfire.\u202fAt the time, my\u202fGP had little knowledge of the\u202fdisease,\u202fso I wasn\u2019t treated\u202fproperly\u202ffor three years.\u201d\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>When his brother became seriously ill\u202fwith IPF and passed away, John\u202fsought a second opinion\u202fand\u202fwas finally\u202fconnected with a&nbsp;respiratory&nbsp;specialist who\u202fhas helped\u202fmanage and treat his condition.&nbsp;With so many questions&nbsp;about the condition&nbsp;and few answers, dealing with a rare and progressive disease like IPF can have\u202fan\u202fenormous impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cI&nbsp;became very angry, as I felt I had lost time from not receiving treatment for three years. Eventually the anger\u202fsubsided,\u202fand I went through a period of anxiety and depression. The uncertainty of prognosis and life expectancy weighed quite heavily for some time. Eventually I realised; I was alive today, would be tomorrow and next month and the anxiety and depression subsided\u201d\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Through&nbsp;our&nbsp;multi-million-dollar research program,&nbsp;Lung Foundation Australia&nbsp;provides seed funds to the best and brightest researchers to&nbsp;discover life-changing diagnosis and treatments&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While living with IPF has its challenges, John is determined to help create positive change for others living with a rare lung condition.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThe researchers that give their time and energy to PF investigations are to be lauded. So far\u202fno cause has been identified, therefore there is no cure on the horizon.
